Maria Branyas Morera (4 March 1907 – 19 August 2024) was an American-born Spanish supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in the world from the death of Lucile Randon of France on 17 January 2023, until her own death over a year later. She is also the eighth-oldest human ever recorded, the oldest person in Spanish history, and the oldest emigrant ever. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) and Guinness World Records (GWR), and recognized by LongeviQuest (LQ).
Biography[]
Maria Branyas Morera was born on 4 March 1907 in San Francisco, California, to Spanish parents Josep Branyas Julià and Teresa Morera Laque. Her family returned to Spain in 1915; her father died of tuberculosis on the voyage.
Branyas Morera married Joan Moret in 1931 and they had three children; August (1932–2019), Teresa (born 1933), and Rosa (born 1944). Moret died in 1976.
Branyas Morera celebrated her 110th birthday on 4 March 2017. She survived COVID-19 in early 2020, making her the oldest person to survive the disease until Lucile Randon survived it in January 2021.
Branyas Morera died in her sleep on 19 August 2024 in Olot, Catalonia, Spain, at the age of 117 years, 168 days.
